Grace went to school yesterday!

Yesterday I took Grace to the Early Childhood Development Fair at the elementary school near our house. As we walked the school halls to the registration table she was prancing on her toes she was so excited and asked me if there were any books here. Grace got to pick out a brand new toothbrush (she chose purple) and color a picture of a dinosaur (pink and purple of course) as we toured the different booths in the gym. Then we stopped by the Health Clinic where they weighed and measured her and pronounced her small. That much I knew! She surprised me by weighing in at over 25lbs and was 34.5" tall and is in the 25th percentile for height and 10th for weight. After the health check we stopped by the speech screening room where she named things in pictures as the screeners listened to her pronunciation of the words. They said she was doing very well and met all the benchmarks for her age and even met a few of the 5 year old benchmarks!

The main stop of the tour was the developmental screening which took about 30 minutes. The lady had two pages front and back filled with questions/tasks for Grace to determine how she measured up to other 33 month old children. They had Grace kick a ball, jump, follow simple directions, try to copy drawing a straight line and circle, use scissors, repeat words, thread beads on a shoestring, and all sorts of other things. The result was that Grace is doing well in all areas except for fine motor skills which really surprised me. I've never thought that was an issue, and I think the reason she failed that part of the test is that she couldn't use the scissors or draw straight lines or circles. She did thread the bead just fine though. I'm not that worried about her failing that part of the test since we haven't really worked on those things. We'll be working on them now though, and they'll be calling me in October to see if she needs to be re-tested.

Our last stop was to the hearing test area which went surprisingly well. Grace let them put the headphones on her head and she could point to which ear she heard the beeps. She passed with flying colors! We skipped the vision test since we just saw the eye doctor last month and we needed to get going in order to get to Corvallis in time for lunch.

We had lunch with David at his new building and Grace proclaimed that "This is a good day!"
